Making your own sweetened condensed milk in the Thermomix takes just 10 minutes, using four ingredients: full-cream milk powder, white sugar, butter and water. It makes the same amount as a standard 395g tin, so it’s a straight swap in any fudge, slice or dessert recipe that calls for it.

This recipe delivers a creamy, thick consistency with no grainy texture or lumps. Although it costs a little more than supermarket Homebrands, it’s still cheaper than Nestlé, and is a handy emergency backup if you run out.
I’ve used it successfully in both my Thermomix coconut ice and Thermomix salted caramel fudge recipe.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It thickens to the right consistency and doesn’t burn the Thermomix bowl.
- It’s fresh and preservative free.
- The recipe can be doubled and stored in the freezer.
Recipe Ingredients

Please see the recipe card at the bottom of this post for the full ingredients and quantities.
Notes on the key ingredients:
- Milk powder – I’ve tested this recipe with Woolworths Homebrand and Devondale milk powder. I haven’t tested this recipe with lite milk powder, as many sweet recipes call for full-cream sweetened condensed milk.
- White sugar – I recommend using white sugar only – either caster or granulated sugar.
- Unsalted butter – I always use unsalted butter in sweet recipes so I can control the amount of added salt.
Step-by-Step Directions
These step-by-step Thermomix photos are here as a visual guide. You’ll find all the exact times, temperatures, and quantities in the printable recipe card below.

- Add the milk powder, sugar and salt to the Thermomix bowl and mix for 3 seconds on speed 5.

- Add the butter and water.

- Cook for 10 minutes, 90℃, speed 3. Place the simmering basket or splatter guard on top of the Thermomix bowl instead of the measuring cup.

- Pour the sweetened condensed milk into a container and leave it on the bench top to cool for 20 minutes before storing it in the fridge. See the storage notes in the recipe card below.
Recipe Tips
Consistency: The sweetened condensed milk will be runny (like custard) just after it has been made but will thicken considerably upon cooling.
Quick clean up: Wash the Thermomix bowl immediately after use, to prevent the mixture from sticking. If it does stick, I find that a little bicarb soda mixed with washing up liquid does the trick.
Uses: This homemade sweetened condensed milk can be used as a replacement for tinned sweetened condensed milk in any recipe. Allow it to cool completely before using it in your recipe.
